W.J. Francis 1964. California Quail May 21. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 0930 Nest in B-6 Same as before, 14 egg unattended. Removed all egg and weighted, total 129.0 gms, ave. 9.2 gms. each. Took these plus 3 previously found to LSB to test fertility by incubating; the ♀ brood have abandoned this nest. May 25. 0900 Heard assembly + squirrel calls as I entered pen, apparently from outside; a male flew off from a perch on top of the pen. 0905 While checking instruments saw a male sitting on a low limb just outside of B-10, giving a long series of 'Cow.' calls. Birds inside remained largely in cover, saw 2 or 3 running along the fence. Dust bath showed signs of use. May 26. 1410 Discovered nest in Behavior Lab pen, Area A-5, with 19 eggs, unattended. 1415 Another nest in area B-3, with 14 eggs also unattended. Hens may have been frightened off the nest as I approached as I heard several alarm notes as I came up to the pen today. 1420. A third
