W.J. Francis 1964. California Quail May 17. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County: feeding rapidly in grain here, soon joined by Red ? , who after a minute moved alone to C-6 (near water hole). Identified first two ? ? as Green + Blue. Heard assembly + squill calls outside, then all birds ran to cover. May 18. 0910. Nest in B-6 still with 14 eggs, not attended. 6-8 birds flushed from in back of eucalyptus in E-4, and flew to east corner. May 19. 1210 as I approached the Behavior Lab. Per ? heard assembly calls, a single "Cow." call and a few squill calls, apparently from just outside the pen; no birds in sight in the pen, calls continued, with "Cow." calls from one bird becoming predominant. Checked nest in B-6; still 14 eggs, unattended. May 20. 0915 Nest in B-6 same as before, 14 eggs, unattended. 0933 "Cow." calls heard nearby; no sign of birds inside the pen as yet. 0940. No birds have left cover in the last half-hour; discontinued observations.
