California Quail
May 17. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County
in physiological laying condition, although
the behavior this past week is not very
indicative of a regular breeding season.
1350 Completed a round of the areas
near the fence, flushing a female
in B-10, no nest near; 2 ♀♀ flushed
from brush in E-10 corner when I
came within 10 feet, including the
crippled one; found a 3rd egg on
the ground in this corner weight
8.7 gms; no nest located. Again flushed
the brush, 4 ♂♂ together from E-1
and 3 ♀♀ separately along the
NW fence line - all ♂♂ cured fly.
Placed the 3 eggs on dried grass at
the base of a grass clump in A2 (to
see what happens). 1405 A further
search of the enclosure discovered a
nest with 14 eggs in area B-6, in a
patch of thick grass about a foot high,
with thickly growing fleshes (as Thistles)
interfused. Suggests Thistles may be

assembly calls from outside the pen.
1435. Two pairs ran to D-3 and began
