California Quail
May 13. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
1005. In the Behavior Lab. pen, 2
pairs, including Yellow Q who appeared
to be hobbling somewhat, feeding in
E2 and E3, another pair in E-5. 1010
all 8 birds moving into D5 and D6, pairs
remaining separate, no antagonism be-
tween adjacent pairs. The birds gradually
moved into taller grass where they
were only occasionally sighted.
1025. Six birds flushed & flew to
east corner (E-10) when I entered
the pen for service work.
May 17, 1255 Birds in sight on
arrival at Behavioral Lab. pen were
a male along fence in E-3, a
pair in weed patch in E-5, and
another pair along the fence also
in E-4. I then entered the pen
to add food & check rain gauge,
and flushed at least 7 birds from
the brush in the east corner (E-10).
1330. Found an egg on the ground
near the fence in A4, weight 9.3 gms.
Very careful search within 20 feet or
more failed to disclose a nest;
also found an egg near the corner
in E-1, weight 8.7 gms. This at least
is evidence that the birds are
