McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo County. pair and nudged the copulating male, who appeared to have completed copulation; all three walked off, the $ suffling her feathers. 0620 a group of 40 birds feeding in lot in back of the horse were nearly all associated in pairs, with additional pairs or in surrounding area. Observed one spirited chase of one male by another Then walked up road to the old house, and saw many quail in pairs & groups - as the groups flushed, they were never in larger fleeces than 12, more usually only 2 or 3 pairs together. Feeding groups were correspondingly scattered. Started 0900 on trip by pickup to various quail areas. Heard a "cow" call in Gill's Canyon, saw a male on fencepost, not calling, in lower Gill's Canyon, another in lower Camatti canyon. A third male at 0935 in middle Camatti, not calling; another $ flushed from fence-row, and cow-calls heard regularly from the other side of the Canyon. A short distance further saw a $ on one fence-post & a $ on a nearby post, while another
