Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County: Fence opposite E-5, and a ? inside Immediately ran to the vicinity. 0959 Heard assembly and Corr.' calls outside, The first Corr.' calls around here this year; As a pair came to E-5 feeding. 1001 This pair, identified as Red ?, Yellow ?, Ran into weedy cover in E-6. Heard "Squill" call outside the pen. 1015 An unidentified ? running along the fence in E-7 with a ? outside the fence. 1025 Ended one-hour observation period with no further activity. 1040 Examined the periphery of the enclosure, and found no signs of nesting; most birds loafing in a group - the crippled hen distanced from the others by 10-15 feet, and another hen flushed from D-1 several minutes after a group of six. May 1. Behavioral Lab. pen. Black ? in D-I near fence at 1255, another pair nearby in D-2. Black gave the im- pression of being or guard or lookout. When I entered, Black plus a ? hidden in the grass nearby flushed ? flew to the east corner. No nesting sign in the fairly open grass where they had been.
