California Quail
April 25. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
E-10 corner, that ran off along the
fence in a single group, 3♂
together
April 26. 1909 3 birds flew from B-4
forwad each corner as we approached
the Behavia lab. pen. 1929 a pair
and two other ♂ began to forage near
edge of clearing. 1935 3 pairs plus
Orange ♂ feeding in center clearing,
with a wild ♂ walking on top of the
pen over them. Pairs well separated, not
identified except Black ♂ with probably
Green ♀. 1939 a pair along fence in
E-6 with a wild ♂ just outside.
1941. Again saw Black ♂ with ♀ now
identified as Green. Wild ♂ on top of
pen right over them. 1945 Orange ♂
perched at instrument shelter & gave assembly
Call, 2 pairs feeding near; ident Blue ♀
and Lt. Green ♂ together, then Red ♂ with
Yellow ♀. 1951 Black & Green drank at
water hole. 1952 all birds, including
♂ on top, flew to east corner when
started.
April 29. 0957 Heard assembly calls at-
side the Behavia lab. pen, then a quail
flew over the pen & landed near the
