California Quail
April 13 Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
1010 to 1055 found no sign of
quail in a tber of brush and fields
to the north of Behavior lab. - most
likely birds are scattered art for nesting
and remaining hidden. Laying
may be generally earlier way in wild
birds, doubtful in those in the pen.
If so, expect hens to be incubating
by May 1.
1800. As I approached the Behavior
Lab. per, 3 quail flushed from
outside the fence by A-1, and 3 or
4 inside the pen flew from A-1
to the opposite side of the pen (in -
cluding the & with the crippled wing).
1817 Assembly calls outside the
pen - often abbreviated to only two
notes. 1820. Second bird heard calling
outside the pen. 1823. A pair foraging
in E-7, into D-7; & retreated at
motorcycle noise and & (Green) went
to D-4. 1825- A pair (Lt. Green &, Blue &) joined Green & in D-4, and
at 1827 all three ran into cover
more or less together. (These are
all first year birds). 1829. A
single & in D-1 (perhaps responding
to birds calling outside) ran
