California Quail -
April 11. Hastings Reservation, Monterey County.
Perhaps the covey is split. 0713. A single
pair feeding near the path at edge of
brushy hillside - assembly calls heard
from several directions about this time.
Summary of quail sightings,
this trip: Of 19 separate
sightings, 8 were of isolated pairs
(plus an additional 8 in 2 cases);
1 single 8 (with possibly a mate
not sighted); 6 scattered groups
with pairing more or less pro-
nounced, including the large
group of about 200 in McMillan's
pasture comprising many pairs
and several loose groups; and
4 fairly definite coveys, well
scheduled (without pairing being
evident when observed).
April 13. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
1000 Birds in the Behavin Lookout pen
were scattered in pairs along the
fence in A-1 to A-10, and re-
maned hidden in grass until I
flushed them. One 8 still
unable to fly. An assembly call
outside repeated several times,
consisting with only two notes and
with emphasis approaching the "Caw" call.
