1964.
California Quail.
April 10. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
a group of about 12 at the edge
of the road, who ran off in
fear as I drove by. Then along
the last stretch of Gillis Canyon
Road, leaving the ranch, were
5 or 6 more pairs, and a
covey of over 50 that flew
south over the ridge; time 1730.
No other birds along Gillis Canyon
road until 1745 when a bunch
of about 60 spread over both
sides of the road near Ivor's
windmill. Pairing not obvious.
April 11. Hastings Reservation, Monterey County.
0625 A small covey feeding in a
fairly compact brush up Quail Hollow -
could not see all of them, only 5 or 6.
Two engaged in a cork fight and
I heard a series of squirrel calls as I
circled the brush trying for a better
view. Quail disappeared into chamise
before I got in position. 0645 Heard
assembly calls by two birds & numerous
low calls in brush below the water tank -
this could be the same group, but I
think it probably further than the others
would have moved. 0748. An assembly
call on the Quail Hollow side of the hill
