W. J. Francis 1964 California Quail April 10. Enroute McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo County. 1400. A string of ran from cover around the gully near eagle-roat pine in Cannatti Canyon. 1407 A pair on hillside below eagle pine. 1700 No quail noted in the immediate vicinity of the McMillan ranch house, but around 200 scattered over the west pasture and adjacent hillside; almost half in isolated pairs, the others clustered, but generally moving in pairs. 1705 Six pairs along the road above the ranch house & a covey of about 50 feeding across the gully below the old house; noted a definite cock fight, with quail calls followed by a chase. Pairing not very pro- hormed in the main body, but several pairs joined as I watched. 1713. A covey of quail & well scattered group around the old house - seven separate pairs above the road, about 20 scattered birds below the road, generally seemed to be paired; noted a chase by one of the 2 of an adjacent pair. Crossing the hill to the north side of the ranch, I saw several pairs among the Atriplex brushes, then
