1964.
California Quail.
April 9. Hauling, Reservation, Mariposa County -
while writing notes; no apparent disturbance.
0656 After circling through brush,
where I heard some quail notes, saw
the same (?) 4 pairs near the road.
The majority of these were banded.
At the same time heard assembly calls
from the chamiz hillside, showing
more birds from a broken-up covey.
April 10. 0635. A small group of quail
ran off through the edge of the brush
as I walked along the pat from
White to Davis house - not much dis-
turbed. 0945 Enroute Hunter Higgett
saw two isolated pairs along the
roadside, one just outside Greenfield,
the other just inside HARE boundary.
Then near HQ area, saw a covey
of about 25 quail foraging with no
obvious pairing, and no antagonism
between males. 1055 Two pairs near
arterial well & cattle trough on
Angyle Road - flushed twice as
couples; also a single bird flushed
the second time. A single pair
seen along Bear Trap loop, and a
pair plus a single J along the
Jalor-Bradley Road.
