California Quail
April 5. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
as they moved into D-4, then under the
Eucalyptus tree when startled.
April 8. The quail in the behavior
lab per flushed several times
due to the disturbance of the
mower cutting grass. 4 birds
together flushed from B-4, others
flushed singly, most birds
ending up in E-10 corner. A
single & flushed later from A-9,
seemed to be quite elusive to
fly, and seen with fluttering
wings - she appeared to be less
able to see wings than when last
seen.
April 9. Hastings Reservation, Monterey County.
0628 Two quail flushed from shelves
near Davis house & flew into oaks.
0633 Four pairs feeding in flat above Davis's
house; pairing apparently definite,
but non-aggressive. Two PAs feeding
near we & showed no interaction. Two
pairs remained close to partners, other
two wandered apart somewhat. Twice
heard assembly call from nearby
oaks. 0641. Heard quail fly into brush,
