California Quail.
March 25. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
1743. Three ♂ and two ♀ feeding in
a close group in D-4., joined after a
moment by another ♂ and ♀; grainings
not in ♂-♀ pairs. 1746. Birds took
cover following motorcycle passing on
the highway. No further activity
until end of observation at 1820.
March 27. 1635 Flushed a ♂ and a ♀
from grass cover in A-10 while setting
mouse traps - these two close together
and separated from the others.
April 5. 1720 all eight birds in the
Belovia lab pen flushed from area
B-6 when I started to spread
grain & check rain gage. One ♀
fluttered along the ground as if
unable to fly, 1750 Several assembly
calls heard, then saw one ♂ in E-5
who quickly ran out of sight,
1757 No further activity, with last sun-
light now off the pen structure.
1806 All ♂ birds feeding in E-2,
then drifted into taller cover within
3 minutes. 1821 A ♂ & ♀ together
in C-6, signs of other birds nesting in
tall grass; another ♀ joined the pair
