California Quail
March 20. Strawberry Camps, Alameda County.
pen, and again heard assembly calls
from this direction at 140.
March 21. 1035 One quail flew from the
west corner (A-1) as I approached
the Behavior lab. pen; 2 38 together
in north corner (E-1) with a 9 alert
10' away from them. 1045 A single
9 flushed from D-4 eucalyptus, then
probably the same one from E-10 corner.
Other birds not seen while in the pen.
1145. All 8 birds together in E-10
corner, after considerable disturbance
by my presence; a pair had just
flushed from C-1 as I
was cutting thistles 8 feet distant.
1815. Lt. Green 9 feeding in D-4
for 2 minutes. 1827 One male in
E-2, 2 others (incl. Red) in E-3.
1830. Red 9 flew into D-4 roost, move-
ments indicated several other birds there,
March 25. 1700. Several quail in the
open in the Behavior lab. pen, now
to cover as I approached.
1740 Several quail moving from E-10
corner toward center of pen. Red 9
perched on dead weeds in E-6.
