W. J. Francis 1964 California Quail March 10. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 1738 Two dogs passed just outside the pen & all quail hid in the brush. 1740. Two ? & and Yellow ? walked along fence to C-10 and the ? under E-9 resort. 1745. Red ? &s Yellow ? feeding close together in C-10, and a ? perched on top of E-7 eucalyptus. 1749. At least 3 birds near the top of E-9 eucalyptus, flew up to E-3 & started to feed but ran back to the corner. A ? & ? of this group were perched with sides touching. 1755 Perhaps the same group - ? & Black ?, and another ? fed briefly in C-3. 1800 No activity - ended observation. March 12. From 0840 to 0910 all quail in the Behavior lab. pen remained together under the brush in the E-10 corner. Much of the time individual birds were moving around restlessly, with occasional individual flights a foot or so beyond the brush. March 14. 1012 Six quail in A-10 corner & Behavior lab. pen - 3 ? & closer to- together, ? & not seen until the birds flew to E-10 brush pile when I entered.
