California Quail
March 8. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
1720. Quail in the Behavior Lab. pens were
all (a brood) around the dry water
hole as I drove up, but ran down
to cover in E-10 closer as the car
passed by. 1735 Two ??, then two
?? ran along fence to C-10, then
scattered - several birds beginning
to forage. 1740. Red ? and Green ?
came up to feed in D-4; then
Orange ? with an unidentified ?
from E-3; finally all eight birds
feeding in a compact bunch until
startled (car on highway or plane over-
head?) 1746. Light-Green ? and Blue
? ran up to feed, soon followed by
all the rest. 1759. Seven birds
feeding together, not paired - one ?
came up, then left before last ? joined.
1807. All birds again feeding together.
March 10. 0955 Quail in the pen remained
resting in cover for the last half
hour, after ? left the pen.
1725. In the Behavior Lab. pen a ?
and a ? making short forays from brush
pile in E-10. 1730 All Birds moving
around restlessly in the brush pile,
? perched on horizontal branch 2' high.
