Californiz Quail
March 26. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo County.
The brush enclosure, no unpaired birds
or mixed groups yet. 1701 The main
body of birds are leaving the brush
enclosure + heading to the gulley;
pairs are obscured by the numbers:
about 60 birds together and several
stragglers following. One clear
antagonistic encounter: first I heard
the combative squill, then two males
faced each other in erect posture +
a short codefight followed; then
me chased the other a few feet.
Up to 1730, with skies gradually
clearing 157 birds crossed over
to the old house. Those around
the house continued foraging,
rather than going into the root.
Summary of this whole cover:
44 obviously mated pairs, 97 birds
either, brunches or singles, total 185
birds. Of the identified single birds,
20 were 88 and 16 94. The 28'
birds crossing along the fence before
1700 were probably those with
strongly developed pair bonds, since
they remained separate both from
the main cover, but generally
from each other until going to care.
