California Quail
March 6. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo County.
1625. With wind increasing & becoming gusty,
and sky darkening with CWNs as another
shower passed close, a single ♂, then
a pair, flew back across the gully,
then 3 more birds ran down toward
the gully. 1627. 3 more pairs moving
up to old house. 1635. 4 pairs plus
a ♂ and a ♀ separately crossed over; one
♂ the previous males made a very
tentative chase - ran a few steps to-
ward another ♂ near his female and
the second ♂ retreated a couple of
feet. 1637 Another pair crossed over,
and a pair returned direct from
old house toward the gully. (Birds
Coming from the gully have all
followed the fence & passed over by
the cattle guard 100 yards above
the house). For the next 10 minutes
all quail in sight moved very little,
and mostly sheltering under and
behind shrubs, although local weather
has not changed - windy + dark sky as
before. 1650 Three pairs suddenly
ran to the brushy scant tree near
the fence, and walked under it; some
flew up into it to roost. 1655
