California Quail
March 6. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo County.
1540. Flushed a bunch of birds in trees
at the edge of the gully by the old adobe
ruins. In walking about afterwards, saw
about 6 run over the ridge to the north,
2 flushed together from the gully edge.
1545. Two Barn Owls flushed from a
large ageratum west of the adobe, then
a large covey of over a hundred from
the small enclosed brush path behind
the ruins. Many assembly calls
heard after this. 1600. A pair in
the road by the old granary, numerous
other birds scattered over the area, more
coming from the brush enclosure.
1602 A pair returning along the road
toward the granary - most birds have
disappeared in cover without sign
I alarm. 1604 Another pair, same
direction. 1607. A pair crossed the
road I ran up along fence toward
the old house; met another pair and
passed with neither taking notice.
Quail visible in the enclosure around the
cistern, many assembly calls, and some
quail feeding along toward the
old house. 1610. 3 more pairs crossed
to old house. Other birds foraging
near the gully did not come closer.
