California Quail
1605. 5 or 6 quail ran from the base
of a large Chancise at the edge of
the clearing with weather instruments
down hill into the chancise thicket.
March 6. Cauissatti Canyon, San Luis Obispo
County. 1300 Flushed one definite pair
and another probable pair from creek
bed in the side canyon beyond the
eagle's nest pine. No sign of a covey
heard, indicating probable pairing.
1355. McMillan Ranch. A pair
walking up the road near the ranch
house, two pairs feeding together, and
about a dozen near bushes with no
apparent pairing. 1417. Flushed a
single bird from the north hillside
just near Old House. 1448 Flushed a
single & dining the car along the
drill row in the "Trees" area.
1455 Flushed the whole covey in the
same area, well over 100 birds. 1500
Another single & in low bushes near
the gully. 1502 Two birds from one
bird near gully, then 4 birds across the
gully. 1507 Single & in brush on earth side
of gully; then another (? ) from a spot
a few feet distant. 1517. A single
from the edge of the gully, may be a repeat.
