California Quail
March 5. Hastings Reservation, Monterey County.
1120. In the second canyon to the left up
the creek, heard many low notes typical
of a covey in the brush on the SE facing
Chaparral slope, near the creek bed. No
response to artificial quail call. 1135
About 10 feet further down the canyon
saw several quail retreating into the
chaparral. 1202 Probably the same
covey, 11 birds counted, crossed the
grassy flat near the juncture of the
two canyons and ran up toward the
oak woodland on the south side.
No tendency to pairing noted - generally
88 were in groups slightly separated
from 99, 3 or 4 to a group, some
singles. 1227. Covey of 18 birds 'feeding
on lawn directly in front of Bell house,
closely grouped as pairing or autagnaisin'.
5-6 other birds between here and the
creek bed. 1232 Four birds flushed from
creek bed & flew to shrub at the edge
of hillside woodland; 21 birds counted
on lawn for minimum total of 25 in
this covey. 1545. 3, then 5 more,
quail flushed from the hillside as
I was re-traiting trap south of the
Bell house, and flew down toward
the creek bed.
