California Quail
Feb. 27. Wildcat Canyon, Contra Costa County.
As before, no birds were in pairs, no sign
of breeding behavior. No birds were
seen or heard in the upper reaches
of the canyon.
March 2. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
0930 Quail in the Behavior Lab. pen
resembled under cover, in brush in
E-10 during observation period from
the time I finished servicing at 0930.
No movement observed up till close
of observation at 1000. I then flushed
the group, who left cover only when
I came quite close. counted all
eight. One Q fluttered near the
ground as if unable to fly properly.
March 4. 1050 3 quail were running
along the 5th fence, separate from the
other 5.
1553 Left Berkeley for Hastings, mileage
51792, and arrived, after stopping in
Gilroy to replace gasoline filter, at
Hastings Natural History Reservation at
1930, mileage 51934. Established
quarters in the old boathouse,
