Feb. 27. Wildcat Canyon, Central Costa County
0920 A covey of 25 or more feeding at
the edge of the Tilden Park playing
field, near Spence entrance. Closely
bunched together, often within a 10 ft.
diameter, and feeding briskly with heads
down - no indication of pairing, no
"guard" keeping lookout. Counted 28
birds from closer position, then birds
retreated into bushy canyon.
0940 While climbing hill to the east, heard
assembly calls from down the canyon,
probably the same covey.
1050 In canyon where first covey was
seen, I saw scattered birds walking through
the underbrush, apparently to covey headquarters in dense poison-oak thicket.
