California Quail
Feb. 13. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
0920 Quail in the Belaria lab pen
congregated in a single brush, retreated
to cover in E-10 when I entered to
service traps.
Feb. 16. Strawberry Canyon Alameda Co.
1700. Birds in the Belaria lab pen
were moving about restlessly in E-10
as I came in to service the traps.
Several perched 2 feet above ground
on the brush pile in that corner,
and low "talking" calls were
given frequently. "Assembly"
calls were heard, apparently from
outside the pen.
Feb. 17. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
0910 Three birds in the troop in the
Belaria Lab. pen, sitting quietly
on the ground and separated. One
escaped via the entrance funnel
as I began removing them. The
others were:
Yellow ♀, wt. 175 gms. Returned to pen.
Unmarked ♂, wt. 194 gms. This is the last
of the birds in the pen of the June 1963
brood. Removed to cage for the
Ent & Paras. study.
