W.J.Francis 1963 California Quail March 26. Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., began moving into open grassy slope above the path. An isolated pair along the path, 1740. After having been feeding in clearing in the brush, the whole covey of 15 birds crossed the path at the base of the shrubby bluff + began feeding in the open grassy slope. At 1747 all birds flew back to nearest shrubbery, with no apparent cause for alarm. March 27, Wednesday. Hastings Reservation, Monterey County. At 0600 no quail were seen in the fen in the usual feeding places. 0611 Heard and saw several quail in + around large Ceanothus bush in "Quail Hollow", which ran + flew into surrounding brush. Two quail flew from perches about 15' up in adjovising oaks. Apparently the birds had not yet left their roost, although it was quite light & warm. I circled the covey range at a distance, but no quail left cover; then I explored the brush and found several quail in and around the roosting bushes at about 0700.
