California Quail
Jan. 19. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.,
as 99 Yellow & Black, 78 Red
and Orange. 1318 all birds
returned to cover, much grain
remained uneaten at this time.
1323. On leaving the station saw a
covey of about 20 on the entrance
road which ran off in a very com-
pact brush down the fire trail
parallel to Grizzly Peaks Bluffs,
showing little excitement. This may
be the covey usually around top #1.
Jan. 22. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
0930 Checked birds in Belvoir hat,
pen by flushing them out of brush
in east corner (E-10). One & did not
flush until I moved the brush -
then ran out & attempted to fly
using only the right wing. The left
remaining folded. She alternating
running with flying attempts the
carried her only a few feet - except for
the left wing appeared to be strong.
Counted 13 birds in all.
