W.J. Francis 1963: California Quail March 26. Hastings Reservation, Mariposa County. were feeding on the grassy slope below brush; a single male, a group of 7, and another group of 4 (2 pairs?). The latter all joined to form a single group. The group was shortly scattered by a pair of magpies, but remained in the vicinity. at 0659 saw a 9 feeding near the "snigge" S. A moment later all birds disappeared into the brush, no apparent disturbance. Made a circuit of this brushy hill- side, and by 0715 no birds had come into the open, but several could be seen within the open brush. There was ample vegetation in the brush, and I suspect the birds were finishing their meal under cover. 1620. Quail have not come into the open in the field where previously seen. I circled the covey territory, and at 1642 saw several birds seem into cover on the brushy slope below the weather station. A break in the clouds at this time gave sunshine in the local area. 1715. Sunshine has gone again. Saw at least 9 quail feeding + moving across opening in brush in vicinity of line stakes. At 1717 they
