W. J. Francis 1963. 274. California Quail Dec. 29. Hunter Liggett Military Reservation, Marlerey County. Between 1100 and 1740 Checked sex & age of quails bagged by hunters in the reservation, with following results: 19 hunters bagged one or more quail, total of 79 birds, Adults: 11 ♂, 12 ♀ Immature: 31 ♂, 25 ♀ Ratio of 56 imm. : 23 adults = 2.43, or 71% immatures. Only 7 hunters bagged 6 or more birds, are c. 4 birds. Dec. 30. Hastings Reservation, Marlerey County. In checking traps this morning saw no signs at all of quail, but additional scat (or house cat?) droppings near traps. Combination of cat & hawk predation seems to have scared this covey away for the time being. Dec. 31. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 1030 Count of 14 quail in the Behavior Lab. pen.
