California Quail
Dec. 11. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
0830. In walking around the
ready areas to pre-lait for future
trapping, I neither saw nor heard
any sign of quail whatever. In
the pen again at 0845, all quail
were completely out of sight in brush
cover; suggests that cold gusty
winds keep them out of the open.
The sun is also so low still that
over half the area of the pen is still
in shadow. Ended Rollowatins at 0900.
Dec. 13. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
0845. Most of the quail in the Be-
harin lab pen along the fence in
A-10 and B-10; when I entered the
pen to add grain they all flew
directly to E-10 to the brush
pile in that corner. All grain
previously spread had been eaten.
0900 Flushed a covey of quail outside
the Beharin lab, near road south of
west gate, about 40 birds that flew into
the large patch of Baccharis in that
area. No action in the pen from 0945
to 1000 when I entered and dis-
turbed them, Counting 14 birds-
13 in E-10 corner, one hidden in grass ready.
