March 25, Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co. this tree, I could see perhaps half a dozen birds sitting on low horizontal (thick) limbs, or nearby about, indicating this and two adjoining oak trees are this night's roost. Total of 15 birds observed, from a covey previously counted at 19, may indicate that two pairs may have left the covey for nesting. March 26. Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co. 0540 Heard first assembly call, accented first syllable. By 0600 assembly calls from several directions, but no birds seen until two flushed singly from trees where seen last night and flew to base of hillside, where they commenced feeding near shrubs. a group of five seen in this spot. 0608 a single bird flew from an oak along creek bank 40 feet from the others, joined another under the pines near the house, and fed along base of hill towards brush. I approached the brush and saw at least seven birds in a group. after a coffee break, at 0645, 12 birds
