California Quail
Dec.5. Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co
Bird appeared to be completely ex-
hauated or in a state of shock
from efforts to escape. I released
her after banding by placing her
on the ground where she remained
crouching for a full minute, and
even swung to the side once.
After I touched her again, and
could have grasped her, she
finally ran a few steps then
fork flight into the chamise
brush; flight seemed normally strong
but terminated after a short distance.
