California Quail
Dec. 4. Hastings Reservation, Monterey County.
15) 1mm. ♀ 56641 - Recapture #1.
While banding these birds, the whole
covey, apparently, flew from the
adjacent channel-covered hillsides
into the group of cale trees in
this area where they are apparently
roosting tonight. I predict good
success in the morning for the
new trap.
All quail taken today appeared
to be fully grown, with no indication
of molt still in progress. These
are all older, then, than the
August band observed in Berkeley,
which were still growing #7 primary
when last checked 2 days ago.
Dec. 5. Hastings Reservation, Monterey County.
0830 Ten quail in the trap at the
base of Ceanothus in Quail Hollow. One
escaped through the entrance tunnel,
and one (already banded) by the
exit door as I was recovering other
birds. Following eight captured:
(16) 1mm. ♀, Banded 56630
(17) 1mm. ♀', Banded 56648
(18) Ad. ♂, 56647 - recapture #1.
(19) Ad. ♀, Banded 56649. This
