California Quail
Nov.21. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
area, although over half the area in
the pen, including the United trap,
is in full sunshine. 1053 Quail
showing some activity in the E-10 cor-
er, with at least 8 birds out of cover
and feeding along 20 feet of fence-line.
A ♂ chased a ♀ for about 6 feet.
At least 6 ♂♀ in this group.
1058 This activity ceased, only 4
birds visible + these again motionless
along the fence. 1100 One young ♂,
darked, fed for one minute around
the trap, then retreated under D-4
eucalyptus. 1109 ♂ came out from
D-4 eucalyptus, giving several "plit"
calls & fed near trap, again for
just one minute. He came out
again almost immediately, then
went back to cover after feeding
for a few seconds. Four birds
still visible in E-10, all crouched
motionless along the fence. 1116 ♂
walked from D-4 to E-1 gave a
two shortened assembly calls, and
began feeding; at 1118 I ran down NE
fence to about E-7. 1035 I gave
several assembly calls on the artificial
quail call, after which the birds
