W.J. Francis 1963 259. California Quail Nov.21. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. 0820. Birds in the Belavia lab pen in cover, few seen near brush in E-10. Grain was eaten up around the outside of the trap, probably mostly by juncos + song sparrows. 0832 Four birds (2524) noted making short forays out of the brush in the E-10 corner. The birds run a few stops along the SE fence, then turn + run back toward the corner, none getting more than 10 feet away. The individual birds were or less follow one another but with a second or two lag so that there is much crossing of birds going in different directions. 0848 after a few minutes during which the birds all stayed in or very close to the brush, 3 or 4, possibly the same group, ventured out along the SE fence to between 10 & 20 feet from the corner, at first feeding, then be- coming motionless. Ended morning observations at 0850, resumed post at 1018: Birds just as before, most in cover and about 4 along SE fence in E-10. Some movement of 1 or 2 birds at a time. The birds are still in a shaded and probably quite cool
