1963.
California Quail.
March 25. Harting Reservation, Marterey County,
1735. Now count 9 in group nearest
hillside, 6 in the other group.
1740. Birds were startled (perhaps
by magpie cry?) and all flew
to cover in Mountain Mahogany Tree
20-40 feet from birds. Two 99
feeding further off walked + saw to
same tree, and another pair con-
tinued feeding. The latter pair
and still another, female then
crushed mot insects in the grass
as jays kept up a series of
calls.
The birds under the mountain
mahogany are essentially invisible, but
one bird was seen to hop up into a
perch about 2 feet above ground,
then move out of sight.
1750. One 8 and 2 9 venturing
out of cover to resume feeding;
followed by other birds
1754. Birds walked rapidly back
under tree, while 5 birds which
were not in this group saw from
grogs to join them under the tree
Sun has left the level field
and the Brushy hill, Sunshine
only on eastern end & valley.
