W.J. Francis 1963. California Quail Nov. 14. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County 0909. I entered the pen & "herded" The birds toward the A-1,2 areas where most feed is scattered; they were relatively tame, allowing me to approach within 30 feet before flying; a group of six flew to E-1, and at least seven toward A1-2; the latter group was also herded into A-1, but all left when I returned to the hut - at least they have seen where food is located. 0935. No sign of any movement of birds until now, when I moved slowly along fence in B-10. 0940. No further activity, terminated observation. Nov. 18. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 0815 Birds in the Behavin hah pen were out of sight in cover when I arrived; noted two or three in and around brushy area in E-10 corner as I was servicing trap and instruments. 0900 After taking station in the ol- Senation hut, noted seven birds along the fences in E-1, standing quite motionless in the sun with com- packed feathers - suggesting that they
