California Quail
Nov 11, Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
0815. Birds in the trap very quiet
until I approached. Took the following:
1) Imm. ♂ - Lt. Green. Wt. 182 grams.
Molt fully complete.
2) Imm. ♀ - Pink. Few coverts still sheathed.
3) Imm. ♂ - 56628. Wt. 183 gms. Molt complete.
Nov. 14. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
0830. Birds in the Behavior half pen
out of sight under cover (mostly in
deck branches piled in E-10) in
windy wet weather. About a dozen
saw up the fence to E-1 when
I entered the pen, then flew
back down as I returned - one
"ragged-tail" indicated a late bird
of the August Quail still molting.
0852. After a series of assembly
calls (source not located) the covey
moved along the fence to C-10,
then up to the central area of the
pen, feeding vigorously. No rain at
this time, & the wind in somewhat
of a lull. A strong gust of wind
after this lull made no apparent
impression on the feeding quail.
0903 About 10 birds have worked over
to areas A-7,8,9, still feeding.
