California Quail
Oct. 31 McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
at the old house - probably about
200 birds; in the Trees area
across the ridge, flushed about
125 birds, and later another
group of 25 or 30 from the
Atmplex planting, with still
more birds clumped in & around
the brush, not flying; and
a covey of about 80 (by a
previous count) near the old
cabin by the junction with
Gillis Canyon Road. At the
Ranch house, quail were all
ready in the coast when we
returned.
Nov. 1. No quail in the trap, which
I left unset, I found no
quail in walking over the
ridge between 0900 & 1000. A
flush of about 30 flushed
in Marim Canyon as we
approached the spring, and
later Dar McMillan with the dog
flushed three coveys from the
bottom of lower Portagee Canyon;
he estimated 450 birds all
together in this area.
