California Quail
Oct.30. Nastrip Reservation, Monterey County.
A bobcat was seen at the edge of
the brushy hillsides last night, near
a large bunch of quail (about
60) that took cover in the brush
after feeding in the gulley. This
disturbance may account for so
few birds being around to-day, the
covey having perhaps scattered
to the higher hills under the bob-
cat threat. 1045 No quail in
the traps near the entrance gate,
but much of the grain eaten in
one of them - probably rodents.
Oct.31. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
0915-1120. No birds in the trap at
Marion Spring, but some of the grain
at the entrance was eaten. No
quail seen in an hour and a half
hike in the vicinity, but a few
calls heard from the middle
ridge of Portagee Canyon, and the
hillside to the south.
1700-1800 No birds in the trap.
Checking the coveys on the ranch
from the pickup, we saw
a very large covey along the
fence approaching the covert
