California Quail
Oct.21. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
After settling down, the birds remained unusually quiescent, not
running about or feeding.
1730 Took imm. ♂ LT. GREEN in
the trap. When releasing him, I
set him down on the ground, and
stroked his back as I released
him; he remained squatting on
the ground without moving. I
reached out and stroked his back
again several times, without him
moving. When I then flicked the
end of his tail feathers he ran
off a few steps and took
flight.
Oct.22. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
All birds remained quiet, mostly
hidden, while I observed the pen
from 1105 to 1205. I entered the
pen & disturbed the birds in E-10
corner - all but 2 ran to A-10 corner;
Black ♀ and an unmarked imm.
♀ remained along the fence in C-10
and E-10 for several minutes, even
when I was as close as 30 feet.
