California Quail.
March.25. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
The other pair of birds did not seem
to be strongly associated, mixing
with the other pairs as they ran back
and forth. Fourth pair was not
seen. By 0900 the outside male
Lod ceased calling, and the birds
inside retreated to cover. Ceased
observation at this time.
March 25. Hastings Reservation, Monterey
County. 1715 Eleven quail foraging
in level meadow between Davis and
White homes. One pair separated from
main group by about 20 feet. A
second P approached this pair and
was feeding close to the P; the first
male walked rapidly toward him,
and the interloper raised his body
nearly vertically & flapped his wings
twice; the original male then
walked past him to his presumed
mate and fed very close to her, as
another pair joined the group -
Eight birds, including this group, are
gradually working closer to the
hillside & chaparral area; the
remainder still foraging in the
same place
