California Quail
Oct. 9. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County
0815. at the Behavior lab. pen; all
birds out of sight as I approached.
When I entered the pen to check
trap and instruments, a few birds
were seen running along the fence;
none flew, as has been the case
recently when they were disturbed.
Even the birds seen were quite sen-
Attmotive in the matted dead grass,
and presumably the others are
hidden in similar cover. This
behavior appears definitely weather
related, being in marked contrast
to previous few days with good
weather, while today is in the
cloud and very damp.
Oct. 11. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.

trap in the Behavior lab pen while I
was in the pen - I hastily blocked
the exit & captured two - one es-
caped around the exit blockage, the
other through the entrance. The
captured birds were: immature &,

about completely some breast feathers
still sheathed - must be Green Brood -
