California Quail
Oct. 4. Hastings Reservation, Marterey County
an area where members of quail have
been seen on several occasions. I
suspect John Dais is right in
saying that this is poor trapping
weather - in cold rainy weather
the quail will flock into the traps
for the bait; now they find all
the food they need with little
effort without going near strange
structures.
1740 Flushed a number of quail
in the brush near the weather station,
who flew further down in same brush
path. At the same time 12 quail
are feeding in front of the White lease,
but ignoring the trap and the
grain around it.
1800 12 quail re-emerged from brush
after being startled, + are feeding near
the trap in front of the White house;
there appear to be 5 & 4 and 7 & 8, no
age estimate possible.
1808 13 quail (1 to 6 at a time)
flew from hillside brush to join the
others feeding. A group of 11 ran past
the White house toward Bell's, followed
in a few moments by all but half a
dozens of the others. 1816. The last 8
