W.J. Francis 1963. California Quail Oct. 4. Hastings Reservation, Marterey County an area where members of quail have been seen on several occasions. I suspect John Dais is right in saying that this is poor trapping weather - in cold rainy weather the quail will flock into the traps for the bait; now they find all the food they need with little effort without going near strange structures. 1740 Flushed a number of quail in the brush near the weather station, who flew further down in same brush path. At the same time 12 quail are feeding in front of the White lease, but ignoring the trap and the grain around it. 1800 12 quail re-emerged from brush after being startled, + are feeding near the trap in front of the White house; there appear to be 5 & 4 and 7 & 8, no age estimate possible. 1808 13 quail (1 to 6 at a time) flew from hillside brush to join the others feeding. A group of 11 ran past the White house toward Bell's, followed in a few moments by all but half a dozens of the others. 1816. The last 8
