W.J. Francis 1963 21. California Quail. Mar.24. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co., in cover - disturbance may have been a plane passing over at this time. By "total" sunset (no sunlight on any objects in vicinity) the birds had not come out. One male was seen sitting on ground, and birds were heard moving in Eucalyptus in B-78. March 25. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. 0818 As I approached the Behavior Lab. pen I saw a single male (cur- trounded) outside the fence, and 5 birds, 3 & and 2 & , inside, apparently attempting to get together. As I approached, the & outside ran along the NW fence, those inside ran to the other side of the observation hut, at least 3 going to the NW fence, then resting there. The male outside gave series of clucks. as he patrolled the fence, a bird inside gave several "Assembly" calls. 0845 3 & and 3 & pacing excitedly along NW fence as birds outside gave repeated "Assembly" calls, then a single "Cow!" call.
