California Quail.
Mar.24. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.,
in cover - disturbance may have been
a plane passing over at this time.
By "total" sunset (no sunlight on
any objects in vicinity) the birds had
not come out. One male was seen
sitting on ground, and birds were
heard moving in Eucalyptus in
B-78.
March 25. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
0818 As I approached the Behavior
Lab. pen I saw a single male (cur-
trounded) outside the fence, and 5
birds, 3 & and 2 & , inside, apparently
attempting to get together. As I
approached, the & outside ran along
the NW fence, those inside ran
to the other side of the observation
hut, at least 3 going to the
NW fence, then resting there. The
male outside gave series of clucks.
as he patrolled the fence, a bird
inside gave several "Assembly" calls.
0845 3 & and 3 & pacing excitedly
along NW fence as birds outside
gave repeated "Assembly" calls,
then a single "Cow!" call.
