California Quail
Sept.27. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
0910 Penned birds out of sight as I
approached the Behrman Lab, were in
the trap. 0925 Baited trap with
Pigeon Grains in the aluminum pie tin
which the birds have been feeding from.
Counted 15 birds scurrying along the
SE fence when I entered the pen.
0950. all birds remaining near the
fence, partly under cover. Noted the
4 7-week chicks feeding near Block 9
in B-10; about 7 birds in a group in
E-10. 1000. The quail have not left
the edge of the fence at any time,
so discontinued observation.
1640. A small group of quail (6-8,
most immatures) flushed from near
the pen as I approached. In the
pen, most birds were patrolling
along the lower (SE) fence, none
in the trap. 1658 Several Assembly
calls outside the pen, at least two
different birds. 1701 φ3♂, φ5♀, and
4 7-week chicks feeding in E-2;
Here young are almost full size,
with a hint of dark feathers around
the eyes of at least one ♂. 1705
