California Quail
Sept. 26. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
Were all (or all those seen) under the
shade of the eucalyptus (temp. 86°)
rather than in the open grass (temp.
110°). They both ran & flew along
fence lines when I entered the pen.
I did not remain to observe at this
time because of the heat.
1845. Quail ran for cover from
the center as I approached the
observation hut. 1850. Group of 6 or 8
birds around E-9 eucalyptus, some
running around, some flying up
into the bush & then down. 1754
Silver pair with 3 immatures moved
up to E-1 - one bird appeared larger,
may be a Green imm &; one silver
chick strayed some distance from
parents. 1903 Green & and an
incident. & fed near water hole.
Orange & in dust bath, 3 or 4 others
around D-4 eucalyptus. Two young &
to water hole, unbranded with
complete adult appearance, probably
are the Orange blood. 1910. Most birds
appearing to be going to roost in E-9
and D-4 but with kinda moving around
noise, and flying up and down.
