California Quail.
Sept. 18, Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
1730 a brood of 10 immature quail
in the trap in the Behavior lab. No
old birds noted, but all but two
escaped due to faulty construction
and handling of holding net.
Banded in: #56618, and
recaptured in: #56616. Reset
and baited the trap.
Sept. 19. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
1400. Checked food in the Behavior
Lab pan: Pigem Grain entirely consumed,
except for a little scattered
around the pan area — the pan
itself had been moved about 2 feet.
A good handful of Her Chow
remained in the other pan — no
additional food quail at this time.
Sept. 20. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
1025 Three quail in the trap. Banded
#56617 — imm. ♂, completely adult
plumage, molt completed.
#56619 — imm. ♂, still molting: black
of throat incomplete, body feathers
still sheathed.
Collected third bird, an adult ♂,
for examination of gonads and liver.
