Sept.10. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
in a group including 4 half grown
chicks of Silver brood. Two smaller
groups of quail just outside the
pen, including some young birds.
Sept.11. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
0810 Most of the birds in the Behavior
lab. pen are in a loose group, strutting
out along the SE fence and patrolling
back and forth. The 4 month-old
chicks are feeding in A-10, somewhat
separated from the others. 0825 I dent.
♀ with 4 chicks as ♀3. a ♀ also with
the group. 0830 Twelve birds visible
in addition to silver family. 0840
I dent ♀ with Silver family as ♀5 - the
group then joined by Black ♀. 0845
Total count 19, Silver family + Black ♀
retreated to weeds in B-5, remaining
birds still along the SE fence.
0847 When I entered the pen to
fill the water hole, most of the birds
took flight to the East corner,
then ran up along NE fence -
they are extremely skittish compared
to previous months; one bird flew
back down the NE fence and
collided, apparently quite hard,
