W.J. Francis 1963 California Quail March 24. Strawberry Canyon Alameda County, that is above the quails' level of Tolerance. A poor time for observation! Looking from outside along fence, I could see at least 5 birds in the cast corner, while Orange 8 and 05 9 had resumed patrolling. The sun was now low enough that the ground surface of the entire pen was in shadow, although the sur- sounding trees were still lighted by the sun. While the Orange 9 was standing motionless feathers fluffed out in a rounded ball, and apparently dozing, The [illegible] Orange male approached from the rear, mounted and copulated. At this distance it was not possible to observe the female's posture after she was ovulated; however, the copulation appeared to be complete, lasting about 10 seconds as in the case previously observed. With sun only on top of trees, 5 birds including both mated pairs ran rather rapidly to center of pen and began feeding on grain and another pair joined them; after less than a minute, the birds again disappeared
